Nothing shouts louder about jumping puddles, playing in the rain, climbing trees and being mischevious, than being in the presence of young people!! As adults in a club, we might talk about 'succession planning' and 'club growth' but at the root of it all, our Juniors are the lifeforce of our club.
Our kids represent vitality, excitement, vigour and promise. They bring joy and laughter, a thirst for learning and so much more!!
We know that sport helps children keep fit, develop skills and build resilience. We know that we must focus on effort, participation and fun above all else. Outrigging allows children to engage in physical activity, learn about teamwork, cooperation and other life skills. It's a great way for kids to make new friends too!!! In order for us to help children become good sports people, we as adults, must demonstrate sportsmanship by being good role models for them. That's a massive responsibility!! From little things, big things grow.....
We are so very proud of our Coral Sea Outrigger Canoe Club 'Honu Iki'. Fresh off the boat, our Junior Coach Lian, could not have chosen a more beautiful name to introduce our Junior Squad.
The 'Honu', or green sea turtle, has been an important Hawaiian symbol for as long as people have inhabited the Hawaiian Islands. A petroglyph of Honu in the lava fields on the Big Island is a simple image of a turtle, with its four flippers out to the side as if it's gliding through the ocean. The Honu is a symbol of good luck in the form of a guardian spirit, or Amakua.
'Iki' simply means, 'A little'.
'Honu Iki', 'Little Turtle'
We are so fortunate to have so many supportive adult members within our club, who together with families, support and mentor our Juniors, imparting knowledge, skill and wisdom, always with patience and encouragement.
If you are looking for a non-mainstream sport to introduce your child or children to, join us!!!
Our Juniors are back on the water for the 2024 Season. Come on down, check it out and jump on to a canoe!! Be on the Beach next to the Rockpool by 7.40am on any Sunday (keep an eye on our Facebook page or the 'Latest News' section of our website for cancellations).
All are welcome :)
